Scallions, a.k.a green onions, are simple to grow and differ from other Allium sp. in that they do not develop a large bulbous root.
Plants prefer loose, well-draining soil of average pH with ample amounts of organic matter and 10-10-10 fertilizer blended in prior to planting. Direct sow seeds in early spring using a 2 in. wide furrow. Cover seed lightly to 1/4-1/2 in. deep, with 12-15 in. between rows, thinning to 1 1/2 to 2 in. apart. Or start indoors with consistent bottom heat of 65°-75°F in pre-moistened starting mix with the same instructions. Seeds germinate in 7-14 days typically.
